‘SUN’ Rises to Support At-Risk 14–15-Year-Olds
DISCO (Downs Industry Schools Co-op) is proud to announce the launch of its newest initiative – the Step Up Now (SUN) program – designed specifically to support 14- and 15-year-old young people who are disengaged or are at high risk of disengagement from traditional schooling and uncertain about their future.
The SUN program offers a powerful alternative to mainstream education, focusing on re-engagement, skills development, and real-world exposure. Over a five-month period, participants will receive individualised support three days per week through tailored training and mentoring from youth workers who are passionate about helping young people succeed.
“This is about giving young people a second chance at finding their path, said Mike Paton, CEO of DISCO. We understand that not everyone fits into the standard education model – SUN is about meeting them where they’re at and helping them step forward confidently.”
Eligible participants will be supported with an individualised Training and Support Plan, potentially gain a vocational qualification, and participate in fun, practical activities like cooking, sport, and teamwork projects. They’ll also visit real businesses to explore and consider future career options.
“This program doesn’t just help prepare them for work,” Mr Paton added. “It gives them belief in themselves – and shows them that they matter.”
DISCO invites schools, families, and community partners to refer young people who could benefit from SUN.
